It’s not usual for there to be a few Spanish shows at the festival. Generally they are stereotypical spectacles with flamenco dance, singing and guitars. Surprisingly this year there is an unusual offering which doesn’t include any of those elements but it’s awesome. It’s called Solfatara and you can see it at Summerhall.
The play is inspired by a book by José Antonio Marina, a Spanish contemporary philosopher. Unfortunately none of his books are translated to English, so seeing Solfatara (which is a word to describe part of the process of a volcano eruption) gives you the opportunity to know a bit more about Marina and practice your Spanish. And how can you practice? English supertitles – rather than subtitles – on stage become the fourth character in the play. This inspired element has its own life and a particular way of translating the dialogues which will make both Spanish and English speakers laugh.
