“La Cubana” is one of the most successful and prestigious theatre companies in Spain. It was set up as a cooperative in the early eighties in Barcelona. The actors do everything: they perform, sing, sew the costumes, paint the stage, etc. Its spirit is the same as the small companies which toured through villages in the past. This romantic attitude hasn’t impeded great success.
The shows are in Catalan, or in Spanish when they are tour away from Barcelona. They are especially famous for humour and the mixture of cultural and popular references with music, dancing and audience participation. If you see one of the shows you may end up dancing, perhaps on stage!
Its play “Mummy, I Want to Be Famous” will be performed in Edinburgh thjis week (13th, 14th and 15th) by students from the University of Edinburgh’s Hispanic department. Every year they demonstrate as foreigners can combine two very difficult skills: a high knowledge of a different language and acting.
